IEEE Delhi Section with Computer Society Chapter, Consultants Network Affinity Group, Life Member Affinity Group, Inter Society Relations, Industry Relations & SIGHT Standing Committees of IEEE Delhi with the associations CSI, Safa Society, ISTE Delhi Section, IETE Delhi Centre, invites you for a Webinar on 07-Feburary-2026, the Saturday, at 06:00 p.m. Small Language Models (SLMs) are emerging as a highly effective and efficient alternative to their larger counterparts, challenging the long-held belief that "bigger is better." Analysis of recent research reveals that SLMs offer a compelling combination of reduced computational cost, versatile deployment options, and state-of-the-art performance in specialized domains. Their success is not inherent to their size but is unlocked through advanced methodologies, including sophisticated data curation, targeted fine-tuning, and innovative system architectures. Key insights indicate that SLMs can achieve a 10-30x cost reduction for common tasks, can be deployed on edge devices to address privacy and latency concerns, and, when properly trained, can outperform even frontier Large Language Models (LLMs) in specific areas like domainspecific code generation, reasoning, and tool use. The most promising path for leveraging SLMs involves a shift in focus from pure scale to a more nuanced approach cantered on high-quality data, specialized training pipelines (SFT, PEFT, DPO, RL), and hybrid deployment patterns, such as SLM-default, LLM-fallback systems. This makes SLMs a critical component for building more accessible, sustainable, and practical AI solutions.
